Battery Power Packs

Battery Power Packs

Battery Power Packs, come in either 12 or 24 volt capacities, small and lightweight these are a handy addition to any home or mobile mechanic, these are probably the most used tool in the breakdown recovery organisations rescue vans.  Specifications to look out for include a voltmeter with battery charge and reverse polarity indicators. Heavy duty booster cables with insulated clamps. DC power socket allows the running of 12V /DC accessories, don’t bother with the mini air compressors that are built in to the cheaper ones, they are not up to much in our experience, better to use the DC power socket to power a better quality tyre inflator. The first one we bought was one of the cheap ones, no make but yellow in colour, loads of places selling them for around £50 then adding thier own company stickers on. It’s been pretty good and will start normal petrol and diesel cars but does struggle with  larger engines if there batteries are really flat.

Buying one of these battery starter packs or jump starters is best approached the same as you might when buying any tools, always buy the best you can afford, or at least consider how your usage might change in the future, you might be driving a 2.0l petrol car now but do you have any plans to swop to a 2.5l diesel and if we keep having these long frozen winters a slightly more powerful starter charger will be a blessing. A good battery pack on offer at the moment is the Draper PP12VB/HD for £100.95

Jump leads

Jump leads

Car Jump Leads come in many qualities, always buy the best you can afford especially if you plan on ever starting diesel engine cars or vans, the extra power needed can melt the cable on cheap jump leads. On higher quality jump leads look out for added safety features such as surge or spike protection devises built in, usually a small LED will illuminate when it’s safe to start the jump starting process. When attempting to jump start a car always follow the instructions found within your owners manual, if you have any doubts on how to jump start your car then refer to a professional or qualified person as damage to the cars ECU can happen.

Battery Chargers

Battery Chargers

Battery chargers are usually rated and priced by their power output, either in amps or sometimes this is mixed with typical size of engine they are suitable for. Features to look out for  include LED battery condition display, charging status display,  polarity  protection and thermal overload protection. Insulated copper leads and quality battery clamps.

Many battery chargers are able to deliver 2 types of charge, one fast the other slow, slower charger a battery is much better and less likely to cook or dry out the battery, aalways folow the instructions but usually this will invlove fast charging for short periods only. Also ensure what type of batteries the charger is suitable for, sealed or lead acid, some will charge both so worth looking out for them.

If you own a classic car, motorcycle or just have a vehicle that is not used very often then invest in a trickle charger or battery mainteince charger, they will ensure your battery is fully charged when yo uneed to use the vehicle but they will also prolong the life of the battery.
